Summer brings a welcome break from the rigors of school for children in Eden Prairie and Chanhassen.
However, for hundreds of kids in those two cities who receive free or reduced breakfasts and lunches each school day, summer is a time of hunger and uncertainty. Families often have difficulty securing enough food in the summer months.
Recognizing this need, PROP Food Shelf is again stepping up with its “Summer Food For Kids” program to bridge the gap.
Throughout June, July and August, PROP Food Shelf will offer an additional “child pack” of kid/teen-friendly groceries to families with school-aged children who access the food shelf (current and new clients).
Jenifer Loon, executive director of PROP, highlighted the growing need in the community.
“Every day, hundreds of our neighbors struggle to put food on their table,” Loon said. “The use of PROP’s services has increased (by) 25% from the previous year. Food insecurity is one of the early indicators of a family in an economic crisis.”
Loon expressed gratitude to the donors and volunteers who make programs like “Summer Food For Kids” possible, emphasizing the importance of partnerships in meeting the needs of children.
To support the “Summer Food For Kids” program, PROP Food Shelf is calling upon the community for assistance.
Financial contributions can be made online at www.propfood.org or by mail to PROP Food Shelf at 14700 Martin Drive, Eden Prairie, MN, 55344.
Two local families have pledged to match all financial gifts, up to $18,000, in an effort to raise the necessary $36,000 for purchasing fresh food and produce.
In addition to monetary donations, PROP also accepts non-perishable food items during its open hours. Preferred items for donation include canned chicken or tuna, meatless pasta sauce, dry pasta, peanut butter, jelly, granola bars, boxed cereal, and gluten-free snacks.
