Voters in Eden Prairie and across Minnesota are participating in the presidential primary on Tuesday, March 5, choosing their preferred candidates for the November presidential election.
Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and residents can locate their polling precincts via the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office website. Eden Prairie has 20 precincts in total.
“I don’t anticipate we’ll have any lines, but as long as you’re in line at 8 p.m. when the polls close, you’re still allowed to vote,” said Eden Prairie City Clerk David Teigland.
Voters must select a ballot for one of the major political parties — Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL), Republican, or Legal Marijuana Now — to cast votes for their party’s presidential candidates.
“It won’t take people very long (to vote),” Teigland said. “There are five people on the GOP ballot, five on the Legal Marijuana Now, and 10, including an uncommitted option, on the DFL ballot.”
Notably, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are leading their respective parties after achieving significant early primary victories.
Challenging Biden on the DFL side are U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips, representing the Twin Cities’ western suburbs, including Eden Prairie, and author-activist Marianne Williamson. Nikki Haley is the lone active contender against Trump for the GOP nomination, with Chris Christie, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Ron DeSantis also listed but having withdrawn after the GOP chair submitted the candidate list.
The Secretary of State’s office has guidelines for the presidential primary on its website. These guidelines state that voters are required to select a specific party’s ballot to participate in the primary process. Failure to choose a party ballot disqualifies participation.
Although voters’ party selections are kept as private data, party chairs will be provided with lists of voters by party affiliation. However, the actual votes cast by individuals will remain confidential.
