About 6,600 Eden Prairie residents took to the polls in the March 5 presidential primary, marking a 16 percent turnout of the city’s 41,156 registered voters, according to unofficial results.
City Clerk David Teigland reported that 370 people voted early at Eden Prairie City Center and 622 voted early by other means, including by mail or in person at the Hennepin County Government Center in Minneapolis.
Eden Prairie Local News (EPLN) tallied the votes in the city’s 20 precincts to determine the candidates’ performance in the election locally.
Former President Donald Trump led the Republican field in Eden Prairie with 1,773 votes (50.18%), narrowly outpacing Nikki Haley’s 1,671 votes (47.30%). The rest of the Republican candidates collectively garnered 89 votes (2.52%).
On the Democratic side, President Joe Biden was the top choice with 2,049 votes (67.18%). Following him were 507 “uncommitted” votes (16.62%) and U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips (D-3, Minnesota) with 432 votes (14.16%). The rest of the Democratic candidates garnered 62 votes (2.03%).
Eden Prairie’s Democratic votes aligned closely with the state’s overall results, but the Republican numbers diverged.
According to the unofficial presidential primary results from the Minnesota Secretary of State’s office, Donald Trump and Joe Biden led their respective parties statewide, setting the stage for November’s presidential election.
Trump secured 68.94% of the Republican vote statewide, significantly more than Haley’s 28.77%.
Biden received about 70% of the Democratic vote, with “uncommitted” at 18.8%, and Phillips at 7.76%.
Haley and Phillips have since withdrawn from the race.
Election judges needed
Eden Prairie is recruiting election judges for the state primary on Aug. 13 and the general election on Nov. 5. The application deadline is Wednesday, May 1, but positions will remain open until filled.
The call for judges was announced in an email to residents on Tuesday, March 12.
“I have received several applications already in just the first 90 minutes after the email went out,” Teigland said last week. “Citizens want to get involved!”
