It’s another election year, and I see the usual banter between both party candidates and the unrelenting political ads, but is anyone addressing safety in our schools and academic performance?
I’m concerned about violence in our schools, and I no longer feel comfortable with or appreciate Carlie Kotyza-Witthuhn as my state House representative.
With so much talk about our kids, we all feel the need to enable and protect them. But is every parent familiar with our schools’ academic scores, whether in Minnesota or in Eden Prairie? Generally, most parents assume everything’s “all good,” and if their child brings home A’s or B’s, they think things are fine. Most don’t know of the troubling scores and how our EP Schools rank, as can be seen here and or here. Just 73% proficiency in writing and 53% proficiency in math. Have we heard anything from Carlie Kotyza-Witthuhn about that?
While this has been going on, how much oversight or concern has been given by “Carlie” voting for HF 4373, found here? However, I see it as detrimental. The final version of the law from the Senate set forth below states as follows: “A public library must not ban, remove, or otherwise restrict access to a book or other material based solely on its viewpoint or the messages, ideas, or opinions it conveys.” The law then allows local districts discretion over material choices and states, “Nothing in this section impairs or limits the rights of a parent, guardian, or an adult student.” This all sounds good until you realize that what used to be considered obscene can still be found in libraries and accessible to children. I and many others don’t want our children to have books available in school or other public libraries that oral and anal sex is a positive method of birth control. That’s not a ban; it’s good parenting. The final bill signed into law can be found here.
I’m hoping Eden Prairie votes against this permissive nonsense and supports a pro-children, pro-school candidate and leader. I’m voting for Wendi Russo for House District 49B. You can find out everything you need to know about Wendi here.
