I am writing in support of Stacy Bettison for MN House of Representatives 49A because she has demonstrated a strong commitment to supporting law enforcement and safe communities, which is extremely important to most people. We need this commitment from our elected officials so that law enforcement officers can safely do their job of protecting and serving the residents of our communities.
While violent crime is down somewhat in the last year, it remains very high compared to pre-pandemic levels. What’s more, reported assaults against police in Minnesota are up 160% from 10 years ago. These attacks include everything from intimidation, biting, and punching to an assault with a deadly weapon. (BCA: Assaults against police officers is on the rise | Kare11.com)
Looking at more recent data, 2023 was an all-time high of violence against officers: 961 instances involving 1,206 officers. In 2022, 859 incidents were reported against 1,062 officers. In 2024, this has been the deadliest year for law enforcement – three officers killed. (Minnesota Justice Information Services – Minnesota Crime Statistics, mn.gov)
The anti-law enforcement, defund-the-police rhetoric was an irresponsible and reckless strategy employed to undermine our law enforcement, its credibility and effectiveness. Who suffers from this? Not only is this harmful to officers, but it hurts our communities. Law enforcement agencies across the state are experiencing a dangerous shortage of officers because of this rhetoric.
Both the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association and the Hennepin County Deputy Sheriffs Association have endorsed Stacy Bettison because they know she will advocate for law enforcement receiving adequate resources and training. They know she will be a champion for keeping law enforcement and first responders safe, and she will be an advocate for safe communities for all.
It is for these reasons I am voting for Stacy. I encourage others to do so as well – we need strong leaders who will support law enforcement so they can safely serve and protect our communities.
