Kelly Morrison, a Democrat and former state senator from Wayzata, won Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District on Tuesday, defeating Republican Tad Jude, according to unofficial results from the Minnesota Secretary of State’s office.
Morrison’s victory fills the two-year seat vacated by Dean Phillips, who left to pursue a presidential bid.
With 198 of 230 precincts reporting, Morrison had 216,416 votes, or 59.1%, while Jude had 149,470, or 40.8%.
Morrison’s background as an OB-GYN and her legislative experience shaped a campaign focused on healthcare, reproductive rights, and environmental policy. Representing communities across the western Minneapolis suburbs, including Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, and Bloomington, the 3rd District has leaned Democratic in recent years, a trend Morrison’s win reinforces.
Morrison resigned from her state Senate seat in June 2024 to focus on her congressional bid. During her time in the state Legislature, she championed policies on health access, environmental protection, and family welfare — all core aspects of her congressional platform.
Jude, a former judge and state legislator from Maple Grove, campaigned on conservative values, prioritizing fiscal discipline and public safety. His platform aimed to appeal to the district’s more conservative constituents.
The Minnesota State Canvassing Board will meet on Nov. 21 to officially certify the election results.
