Mitch Hegland, associate principal at Eagle Heights Spanish Immersion School in Eden Prairie, has been named the 2025 National Outstanding Assistant Principal by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP).
The award, announced Tuesday, Dec. 10, by the Minnesota Elementary School Principals’ Association (MESPA), recognizes Hegland’s leadership and dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive school culture. According to MESPA, Hegland played a key role in earning Eagle Heights recognition as a PBIS Sustaining Exemplar School, a designation given to schools that use proactive behavioral practices and restorative approaches.
“He has led our PBIS initiative with passion, teaching children to learn from their mistakes and develop skills for lifelong success,” said Eagles Heights Principal Hernán Moncada. “He champions an approach that values personal growth, building resilience in both our students and staff.”
Hegland also emphasizes professional development for teachers, MESPA said, partnering with educators to implement practices such as Responsive Classroom, Multi-Tiered System of Supports, and the Science of Reading. These efforts, according to MESPA, aim to provide students with high-quality, innovative instruction.
His focus on fostering community extends beyond the classroom. “One of Mitch’s most outstanding qualities is his selflessness,” said Felicia Thames, assistant superintendent of elementary education. “He is a volunteer at the Simpson House, a homeless shelter in Minneapolis, and PROP, the local food shelf in Eden Prairie. He demonstrates a deep commitment to giving back to those in need.”
Hegland’s leadership also includes building strong relationships with families at Eagle Heights, MESPA noted. The association praised his ability to ensure families feel heard, valued, and supported.
“Dr. Mitch Hegland exemplifies the transformative impact exceptional assistant principals have on their school communities,” said Michelle Krell, MESPA’s executive director. “This award honors his dedication to fostering inclusive, thriving environments and highlights the critical role assistant principals play in shaping the future of education.”
