The City of Eden Prairie has opened its annual Black History Month Words in Action Contest, inviting youth in grades K-12 who live or attend school in Eden Prairie to submit entries reflecting on a quote from a Black civil rights leader.
The students may express this meaning through writing, art, video, or audio and include reflection on the words of the selected quote and ideas for how the student can carry forward the civil rights leader’s legacy in the Eden Prairie community. The Human Rights and Diversity Commission has provided some suggested quotes, as well as additional contest guidelines, on the contest page of the city website.
Up to four $75 cash prize winners and four $50 honorable mentions will be selected, with winners recognized at the Feb. 18 City Council meeting. The Eden Prairie Community Foundation sponsors the cash prizes. The 2025 contest opened Jan. 9, with entries due by Feb. 3. Each individual may submit one entry.
The 2024 Words in Action contest winners, as well as those dating back to the first edition of what was then called the Martin Luther King Jr. Words in Action contest in 2021, are listed on the city’s contest page on its website.
