Some shows entertain, some inspire, and some? They ignite the imagination. “Milo Imagines the World” at the Children’s Theatre Company does all three – and more. It’s a visually stunning, heartwarming ride that captivates from the very first note to the final bow. My 3-year-old nephew was absolutely enchanted, and judging by the giggles, claps, and aisle dancing, the entire audience – kids and adults alike – felt the magic, too.
At the heart of this world-premiere musical is young Toussaint Francois Battiste as Milo, and let me tell you – this kid is a powerhouse. His performance is magnetic, brimming with heart, curiosity, and just the right touch of mischief. He carries the show with a presence well beyond his years, making every moment on stage feel fresh, real, and full of wonder. Watching him navigate the ups and downs of his journey – both on the subway and in his own mind – was nothing short of mesmerizing.
Antonisia (Nisi) Collins also delivers a standout performance as Adrienne, making her and Battiste a great duo. The ensemble is engaging and hilarious, adding layers of charm and energy to the show.
The production is an awe-inspiring fusion of music, movement, and storytelling. Breon Arzell’s choreography is electrifying, bringing Milo’s imagined worlds to life with movement that feels both playful and deeply expressive. The set design transforms the UnitedHealth Group Stage into a bustling subway car that seamlessly morphs into dazzling dreamscapes. And the music? Absolutely infectious. The score blends hip-hop, pop, and even a touch of country, creating a soundtrack that had toes tapping all around me.
But beyond the dazzling spectacle, “Milo Imagines the World” delivers a message that resonates deeply: the power of perspective. Through Milo’s illustrations and imagination, the show challenges us to look beyond first impressions and see the full stories of the people around us. It’s a lesson wrapped in joy, humor, and heartfelt moments that land right in the feels.

This production is a milestone for the Children’s Theatre Company, which recently received a $40,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to bring “Milo Imagines the World” to life. With this kind of support, CTC continues to prove why it is the nation’s most celebrated theater for young audiences. Its commitment to bold, meaningful storytelling is evident in every moment of this show.
Bottom line: If you have kids, take them. If you don’t, borrow some. This is a must-see experience that reminds us all – no matter our age – that imagination has the power to change how we see the world. And in Milo’s case, it can change the world itself.
