Online registration for the West Metro Senior Softball Association begins at 1 p.m. Monday, April 7. The league, open to male or female players age 50 and older, begins its eighth season in Eden Prairie this year with games at Round Lake and Riley Lake parks.
“Everyone gets plenty of playing time,” said West Metro Commissioner Bob “Doc” Hartshorn. “We do not hold tryouts for our league, but you’re welcome to stop by any game day to try us out.”
The senior softball outdoor schedule runs from early May to mid-September, with games every Tuesday and Thursday, except holidays. Each day begins at 9 a.m. with batting practice and warm-ups. The first of two games starts at 10 a.m., and the second usually ends by 12:15 p.m. Some players participate on both days, while others choose to play one day a week. The registration form will offer both options.
There will be three seven-week sessions. “We make new teams each session, so players get to know each other,” Hartshorn said. “Through the summer, we track game results and division standings. We celebrate the end of the summer season with a One-Pitch tournament and a catered picnic.”
The league expects registration numbers similar to 2024, with an estimated 150 participants forming 10 teams of 15 players each.
The league asks each player to bring a glove but provides bats. Players do not wear uniforms, but dress for the weather and active exercise. Metal baseball cleats are not allowed. Acceptable footwear includes rubber cleats, turf shoes or running shoes with good tread.
Divisions for recreational, competitive play
The West Metro is divided into the Northwoods and National divisions.
“Depending on your softball background and current level of activity, you may start out in our Northwoods Division,” Hartshorn said. “This is our ‘Recreational Group’ and is made up of folks that either have less softball experience, have not played for a while, or want less competitive experience.
“It is also a good place for if you have played in the past but need to work into game-shape. The ages of most Northwoods players range from 60 to 80, with an average of 75 years. If you have been playing ball at a more competitive level, you may play in our National Division.”
The National Division includes younger players (ages 50 to 80, with an average age of 65). Many National players participate on traveling tournament teams and are used to competitive games. In both divisions, players are assigned to teams for parity, and each team designates a player to serve as manager for the session.
