A Coon Rapids man is facing felony and misdemeanor charges after allegedly fleeing Eden Prairie police in a high-speed chase that reached 110 miles per hour and was later called off due to safety concerns.
Jehfar Mohammed Alhameed, 20, is charged in Hennepin County District Court with one felony count of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle and one misdemeanor count of reckless driving. The criminal complaint was filed March 21, and a warrant for his arrest was issued the same day, according to court records.
Police say officers attempted to stop a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox near Mitchell Road and Lone Oak Road after observing the vehicle make an abrupt U-turn without signaling and noting that the rear license plate was not illuminated. When officers initiated a traffic stop, the driver allegedly accelerated onto Highway 212 and later onto Highway 62, reaching speeds over 100 mph while swerving through traffic and failing to maintain a single lane.
The vehicle exited and re-entered the highway multiple times, allegedly ran a red light at Xerxes Avenue – nearly hitting another vehicle – and came close to striking an Edina police squad car positioned on an on-ramp. The pursuit was ultimately terminated near Interstate 35W and East 60th Street due to public safety concerns.
Investigators later identified the driver as Alhameed, according to the complaint. He remains at large as of Thursday, April 3. Bail has been set at $20,000.
