Fans of comedy, music and adventure are sure to enjoy Central Middle School’s (CMS) upcoming production of “Disney’s Descendants: The Musical.”
Based on the popular Disney Channel Original Movies, this family-friendly musical features beloved Disney characters and hit songs from the films. More than 130 CMS students in grades 6-8 are involved in the production.
Music Theatre International, which created the show, describes the plot this way: Imprisoned on the Isle of the Lost — home to the most infamous villains who ever lived – the teenage children of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Jafar and Cruella De Vil have never ventured off the island – until now. When the four troublemakers are sent to attend prep school alongside the children of beloved Disney heroes, they face a difficult choice: Should they follow in their parents’ wicked footsteps or learn to be good?
“This is a show that our cast, crew, and pit grew up watching, so the characters and plot evoke feelings of nostalgia,” said Katie Skramstad, the show’s artistic director and a CMS English teacher. “Earlier this year, our drama club performed for Little Eagles preschool, and they saw how delighted a younger crowd can be with theater.
“We anticipate that some of our most enthusiastic audience members may be elementary and tween students in the community,” she said, adding that there will be a special “dress-up” photo booth in the lobby for younger audience members.
However, Skramstad said the show will appeal to all ages. “Everyone will recognize characters we’ve grown up with over the years,” she said. “Also, this is a story of hope and second chances, and everyone needs that.”
Shows will be performed in the CMS Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 29; Thursday, May 1; and Friday, May 2, plus a matinee at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3. Tickets will be available at the door, and concessions will be provided by Eden Prairie’s Talon Robotics Team.
