Art at the Senior Center

April 14, Glass Flowers and Plants
Create vibrant plants for your home that will last no matter the weather. Participants learn to cut and assemble glass pieces into bright flowers, cacti or plants that can sit on a shelf for display or even accompany a live potted plant. Must wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Completed projects available for pick-up at the Senior Center two weeks after class.

April 28, Natural Fabric Dyeing
Learn how to use natural fabric dyes such as vegetables, plants or spices to color fabric. Participants leave with the basics on natural dyeing, a piece of dyed cotton and care instructions.

May 12, Painting with Alcohol Inks
Discover the intriguing process of using brightly colored dye-based alcohol ink to produce stunning abstract paintings on Yupo paper. Participants leave with several small works on paper along with instructions on how to seal the pieces at home.

May 26, Learn to Paint
If you have always wanted to paint this is a great opportunity to learn the basics in a relaxed and friendly environment. Instructor-led demonstrations guide participants through painting a still-life or landscape using acrylic on canvas board. Each participant leaves with a finished painting and the skills to continue exploring.

June 9, Berry Bowl-Building in Clay
Create a unique bowl to clean all of your summer berries. Participants learn how to form a bowl using slab construction and hump mold. With step-by-step guidance, a pedestal foot is attached and small holes carved out to allow for proper drainage. Completed projects available for pick-up at the Senior Center two weeks after class.

June 23, Watercolor Basics
Watercolor is a flexible and accessible medium to start painting. Instructor-led demonstrations cover the basic tools and a variety of methods such as wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry and layering to produce a lovely still life image. Participants leave with a finished watercolor and confidence for further exploration.

July 14, Pastel Drawing- Landscape
Instructor-led demonstrations guide participants through drawing a landscape from a photograph using soft pastels. Each participant leaves with a finished drawing and the skills to continue sketching their environment.

July 28, Tote Bag Printing
Learn how to carve a foam or EZ Carve block paired with fabric ink to create patterns or customized designs to decorate a reusable tote bag. Use the new unique bag instead of plastic for groceries, carrying books and more.

Aug. 11, Paint Your Pet
Learn the basics of acrylic painting using a photo of your beloved pet as inspiration. Each participant leaves with a painting on a canvas board and the confidence to continue exploring.

Aug. 25, Paper Marbling
Experiment with several marbling methods to create a one-of-a-kind paper for stationary, cards and more. Participants find out how basic materials such as shaving cream, bubbles or soap combined with art supplies can create colorful, abstract imagery.

The Art Center continues to follow state and MDH guidelines for Covid-19 with some adjustments to keep our community thriving. Currently, we highly recommend that all individuals wear a face mask at all times indoors and if within 6 feet of others outdoors, even if vaccinated. If unvaccinated, please plan to wear a mask for the entirety of the program. Please bring your own mask or one will be provided.
