As we approach the November election for Eden Prairie School Board, it seems we should consider that which is most important to our children.
The first, of course, our school should be a safe place of learning for all. All means everyone, regardless of religious affiliation, skin color or gender. The second is we should strive for great numbers in terms of college readiness and graduation rate. According to a Google search by state, Minnesota only ranks 29 in college readiness and 34th in graduation rates.
When choosing five candidates to fill vacancies on the board, we should identify those willing to make a change to standards and policies that teach and educate math, science, history, language, business, philosophical views and perhaps consider a more classical education model. A trivium, if you will.
Our focus shouldn’t be to indoctrinate, nudge or persuade students to a certain political or cultural bias, whether “left” or “right.” Rather, parents should be responsible for these influences at home and not subordinate their influence and messaging to the public school system. Please elect candidates who support letting schools “teach” vital subject matter and leave the pop culture bias to the cable channels. This means we need to change the direction of the Minnesota Department of Education director, a position appointed by the governor. That, too, is on the ballot this year.
Vote Stubbs. He gets it. So do Bartz, DD, Casper, and Libsack. We need them on our school board.
Mike Kotila, Eden Prairie
