Richard Gibson Sager passed away on Oct. 19, 2022, at the age of 86 at Riley Crossing in Chanhassen.
Born Dec. 17, 1935, in Minneapolis to John C. Sager and Ruby Ferm Sager. Older sister Marian Koehler and older brother James Sager precede him in death.
Dick attended Whittier Grade School and West High School. He told stories of how much he loved growing up on Dupont Avenue, just a few houses away from the Ferm grandparents, who he calls “perfect people.” After graduation, he served in the Army and enjoyed his time serving on the Amphibious Duck Boats.
Dick was a loving husband to wife Mary Jean Sager, who precedes him in death as well as a loving father to daughters Julie Bergquist (husband Scott), Karen Hansen (fiancé Paul), Sheila Sager and Linda Thalacker (husband Craig).
Lovingly known as “The King,” Dick was known for his sense of humor, “Gigs” (dinner parties where he was gifted at bringing people together), “McSager” breakfast sandwiches and his love for helping and connecting with others.
Dick and Jean raised their family in Eden Prairie and loved the community and friendships there. Dick enjoyed a 50-plus-year career in real estate.
When Dick and Jean moved to Vanderbilt Country Club in Naples, Florida, in 2003, they brought many friends from Minnesota with them and made many new friends. Dick especially loved volunteering at NCH Hospital in Naples where he cared for many and brought laughter to the patients, nurses and staff. Dick was a dedicated member of AA and considered the men in his group family. Dick was also a patriot through and through. He loved God, family and his country.
Dick’s family and friends are truly blessed by his example of “Loving your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39). Dick loved and appreciated all who cared for him at Riley Crossing and Brighton Hospice.
Dick is survived by many, including grandchildren Sara Bergquist (fiancée Cody O’Brien), Daniel Bergquist (sig other Morgan), Katie Hansen (fiancé Justin Jones-Frazier), Nick Hansen, Amanda Thalacker (sig other Cody), Abby Beery (husband Grant) and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
