A nearly-complete, long-range plan for parks, recreation, and natural resources is being previewed by the Eden Prairie City Council at its Tuesday, May 2, meeting.
It’s one of several items on the agenda for the city council, which starts its meeting at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the Eden Prairie City Center, 8080 Mitchell Road. Meetings are also broadcast; details are on the city’s website.
The city calls it the Parks, Recreation, and Natural Resources Guide Plan. “Guide Plan” is a term often used by the city to describe long-range plans that aren’t set in stone. The documents serve as planning and forecasting tools, helping “guide” the city’s day-to-day work.
Similar park plans were created in 1965, 1989, and 2003, according to a staff memo about Tuesday’s meeting. In 2018 there was a significant amount of parks and recreation planning as part of the city’s work to create Aspire 2040, its overall Guide Plan.
In the staff report, Director of Parks and Recreation Jay Lotthammer says the new plan differs from some of its predecessors, which focused in part on parkland acquisition. With Eden Prairie now largely developed, the new plan is expected to help the department adjust the city’s amenities to meet changing demographics, including an aging population.
