Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless Summer Challenge

Today marks the beginning of the PROP Food Shelf Summer Challenge!

Open Your Heart (OYH) to the Hungry and Homeless organization will match a portion of all financial gifts at PROP during the month of July (July 1 – July 31). PROP’s goal is to raise $50,000 toward this matching opportunity! This match is part of an annual food shelf grant challenge to help food shelves during their time of greatest need — the summer months.

While children are on summer vacation they and their families cannot benefit from free/reduced school breakfasts and lunches. This greatly affects PROP as 45 percent of their clients are children. Thus, this July is a great time to give. The OYH match helps donations stretch even farther to feed those in need.

The Summer Challenge is carried out in partnership with Hunger Solutions of Minnesota. Last year this challenge helped 360 communities to raise millions of dollars to purchase resources to assist those in need. Resources include but are not limited to food and accessible shelter. With 1 in 8 people in Minnesota facing hunger right now, this July is a perfect opportunity to help those in need.

PROP helps to meet the food resource needs of 3,400 Eden Prairie/Chanhassen residents annually. This is accomplished through several programs catered to families, children and seniors with an eye to providing healthy and fresh foods. PROP also sees 250 visits to their food shelf each week. PROP relies upon donations from organizations, churches, schools and individuals to provide these services.
