Sophomore Lily Liu gave up a triple in the first inning against Chanhassen Thursday and didn’t give up another hit en route to a 5-2 Eagles win in the 2AAAA softball tournament. Both runs were unearned.
Senior Kari Welter drove in two runs, while junior Rose Neuman, senior Cierra Creager, and junior Ava Kizewski each drove in one run, leading to Chanhassen’s elimination from the tournament.
The victory set up a matchup between the Eagles and their nemesis, Minnetonka. The Eagles fell behind 4-1 through four innings before sophomore Maya Miller drove in two runs with a single in the fifth, followed by a Lily Liu RBI in the sixth to tie the game 4-4. The Eagles blew the game open in the top of the seventh with sophomore Rose Weber driving in two runs and junior Ayana Lombardy driving in another.
Welter, who pitched the entire game, shut down the Skippers in the bottom of the seventh to complete the win 7-4.
The Eagles, who lost their opening game Tuesday to Waconia, will continue play on Tuesday, May 30, in another do-or-die game. The fourth-seeded Eagles will go up against sixth-seeded Prior Lake at 4:30 p.m. at Miller Park.
