Eden Prairie Local News (EPLN) received two second-place awards at this month’s Page One Awards ceremony hosted by the Minnesota chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). An entry by Rick Olson placed second in the Sports Photography category, while an entry by Jim Bayer placed second in the “Feature Reporting (small)” category. “Small” refers to publications with a circulation of less than 50,000.
The Bayer entry for feature reporting, “Memories, Moves and Rowing,” consisted of three stories published in EPLN during 2022: “Mother, sister remember Charlie Alleman,” “Lincoln Lane homes take final journey — to be recycled for new families,” and “Rowing Bryant Lake.”
The Olson entry, “Eden Prairie High School Sports,” consisted of photos that accompanied the following stories published during 2022: “Eden Prairie’s dominance over Farmington honors Eagles’ past,” “Miracle finish: Eagles pull off the impossible to upset top-ranked Wayzata,” and “A wind-swept night for EPHS girls’ soccer against Edina.” Entries in photography categories were not divided by a publication’s circulation.
The award ceremony’s keynote speaker was Steve Grove, CEO and publisher of the Star Tribune. His remarks included references to community journalism, including statements that it is important for people to know and live in the communities they cover and that media has the ability to play a unique role “to help people feel connected and rooted in a place.”
Over 400 entries were submitted in over 50 categories for the 2023 Page One Awards. A full list of winners can be found on the Minnesota SPJ website.
