Eden Prairie resident Alex Falconer, a longtime organizer and former DFL employee, officially declared his candidacy for Minnesota State House seat 49A on Sunday. He is running as a Democrat.
Falconer’s entry into the race follows the retirement announcement of Rep. Laurie Pryor, making him the first contender to enter the field.
Pryor, a Democrat who has represented the district encompassing northern Eden Prairie and southern Minnetonka since 2017, will retire at the end of her current term. The election for the 49A seat is scheduled for Nov. 5, and the winner will assume office in January 2025.
In a media release, Falconer announced his intention to seek the DFL Party endorsement at the Senate District Convention in April. He expressed his appreciation for Pryor’s contributions during her tenure, citing “historic legislative wins for all Minnesotans” in the most recent session.
Falconer emphasized his background in political and grassroots organizing and outlined his campaign’s priorities, including environmental stewardship, access to affordable healthcare, a strong public education system, and a balanced economy.
“For over two decades, I have led successful initiatives for our state — delivering protections for the Boundary Waters, community health initiatives, and key electoral victories to make Minnesota a better place,” he stated. “I am eager to work to earn the endorsement of my friends and neighbors in Eden Prairie and Minnetonka as we work together to continue our tradition here of strong schools, a strong community, and a strong economy that works for everyone.”
He started his career as part of the then DNC Chair Howard Dean’s State Partnership Program in 2006, where he worked as a field director in Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District.
Since then, he has managed field programs, special elections, and congressional campaigns and worked as a consultant for Democratic parties and candidates across Minnesota and the country.
Falconer currently serves as campaign manager for the campaign to Save the Boundary Waters — the organization heading a national coalition of conservation organizations, businesses, and hunter-angler groups to protect the wilderness from what his press release states is potential ruin via proposed sulfide-ore copper mines.
He and his wife have three kids in the Minnetonka public schools. He is an assistant coach of the cross country running team at Minnetonka Middle School East and is an assistant coach with the Minnetonka High School Nordic Cross Country Ski Team.
The Falconer family has lived in the district since 2013.
