The filing period to run in the special election for the District 6 seat on the Hennepin County Board starts on Tuesday, Feb. 27.
Candidates interested in the position must submit their paperwork to the county auditor by the filing deadline of March 12. They have until March 14 to withdraw their candidacy.
The special election is slated for May 14. If the race attracts more than two candidates, a primary will be held on April 30.
District 6, which includes 66 precincts, encompasses parts of northern Eden Prairie, Deephaven, Edina, Excelsior, Hopkins, Mound, Minnetonka, Orono, and Wayzata.
This special election is necessitated by the resignation last September of Chris LaTondresse, who left to become the CEO of Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative in St. Paul.
The winner of the special election will complete the remainder of LaTondresse’s term, which lasts through 2024.
To date, candidates who have declared their intention to run — all from Edina — are state Rep. Heather Edelson (DFL-50A, Edina), DFL political advisor Patrick Gage, small business owner Janet Kitui, community impact leader Daniel Moret, and Hopkins School Board member Jen Westmoreland.
The District 6 seat will also be up for election in November for a full four-year term.
Prospective candidates interested in the District 6 seat for the term beginning January 2025 must file their candidacy between May 21 and June 4. This filing period also applies to candidates for other offices that might necessitate a primary election.
