Sweet Potato Comfort Pie Juneteenth Pie Showcase
Rose McGee, Founder of the Sweet Potato Comfort Pie organization, said, “The Pie Showcase provides an opportunity to celebrate each other, share our stories and explore the meaning behind the sweet potato comfort pie, which I consider to be the ‘sacred dessert’ of Black culture. We are looking forward to coming together to celebrate our joy during this Juneteenth season and to be together as one community. Anyone, any culture, is invited to make their rendition of a sweet potato pie.”
Community members will bring their own version of the sweet potato pie and share the personal stories behind their creations. Our own local celebrity tasters who will sample each pie include Chef Lutunji Abram, Founder & CEO of Lutunji’s Palate; Melvin Giles, Founder of Community Peace Celebration; Kevin Lindsey, CEO of the Minnesota Humanities Center; LaDonna Redmond, Food Justice Activist; Anthony Scott, Co-author of Minnesota’s Black Community in the 21st Century; Nicole Pacinni, Social Venture Entrepreneur. Shayla Reaves, WCCO News Anchor will emcee the Showcase.
Food and beverages will be available at the Mill Valley Market located in the Trailhead building. A live band, JAMPACT featuring Lia Renee Dior, will perform from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on the patio. Although the audience can not taste Showcase pies, there will be plenty of Rose McGee’s award-winning sweet potato pie available for all to taste.
This event is free and open to the public. To share your story and pie, please sign up here!
