Seven diverse one-act plays, three of which are premiere productions, make up this final weekend of the Eden Prairie Players’ Collection of One Acts in its 17th year at the Riley-Jacques Barn. The seven plays were selected over several months from 150 submissions. Producer Elizabeth Michaelson shared the rigorous vetting process. Some 30 volunteer readers reviewed the scripts, evaluating the 15- to 20-minute plays on the originality of treating familiar topics through a new lens, addressing life and death issues within family and society, and determining whether they could be performed on the unique Riley-Jacques stage. Blayne Penny and his son Ace faced off in a sweet corn eating contest at the Eden Prairie Lions Club Corn Feed. The tradition returned under cloudy skies to Round Lake Park on Saturday, August 7.
Continuing the Starring at Staring series, The Eden Prairie Community Band opened the Sunday night, July 25th concert at Staring Lake Amphitheatre with “That’s Entertainment.” In turn, dressed in white shirts and black shorts, the band did indeed entertain with a tour of music from around the world. They played “Jazz Suite: Waltz No. 2” by Dmitri Shostakovitch; “Danny Boy” from Ireland; Chuck Mangione’s “Children of Sanchez;” a tune called “Ballet Open” from France. The band ended with rock and roll from the American Bandstand era. Midway through the musical tour, the listeners were challenged to name all the songs…
