Happy Hour at the Art Center

Space is limited so register early.

Try something new while relaxing after a long day. Bring your favorite work crew, schedule a friend outing, have a special date night, or come to meet and mingle with new people. Each week offers a different project that can be completed by any participant with no previous experience. This is a great opportunity to meet Art Center instructors, and discover and explore the beautiful facility. Please feel free to bring your favorite beverage (adult or other) to enjoy. April 8, Weaving on a Frame Loom- Beverage Cup Cozy
Learn about the frame loom by making a woven hot beverage cup cozy. Instructor-led demonstrations cover the basics of weaving creatively and how to add textured details for a unique gift or to take home.

April 15, The Gift is the Box- Paper Marbling and Origami
Create a box as beautiful as the gift inside. Participants learn how to marble paper and then use the Japanese paper-folding technique of origami to craft an original paper box to keep or give as a gift to someone special.

April 29, Clay Surface Design
Discover all of the ways that texture can elevate clay pieces to a new level. Participants learn about the clay-slab technique combined with a variety of texturizing processes such as stamping, carving and slip and score to produce unique patterns or drawings in clay. Participants are encouraged to bring a flat, textured item for imprinting, such as lace, leaves, flowers or stamps. Completed projects available two weeks after the workshop.

May 6, Fire and Glaze- Wheel Thrown Pottery
Get your hands dirty and try out the potter’s wheel in a relaxed and supportive environment. With instructor-led demonstrations and step-by-step guidance, participants explore wheel thrown pottery and discover their inner artist. At the end of the evening, participants may choose to keep or recycle their creation; the Art Center staff will finish and fire one piece per person in the glaze of choice. Completed projects may be picked up at the Art Center two weeks after the workshop.

May 13, Red Fox in Pastel
Delve into the fun and accessible world of pastels and develop drawing skills with step-by-step guidance. Participants learn how to use pencil, charcoal, and chalk pastel to create a stunning image of a red fox.

May 27, Monoprinting- One-of-a-Kind Prints
Monotypes are a fun way to get into printmaking by creating free form designs or images with paint or ink. Participants learn how to mix colors and textures on Gelli ® Plates, then transfer their designs onto paper to produce one-of-a-kind artworks.

June 10, Fused Glass- Creating a Stained Glass Look
Play with geometric shapes and designs made out of glass stringers and frit on a clear glass tile to make a lovely piece that resembles stained glass. Must wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Completed projects available two weeks after the workshop.

June 17, Fabric Coil Bowl
Using a version of the simple blanket stitch, participants build a small container out of fabric strips and cording that can be used as a plant hanger, desk decor and more.

June 24, Papermaking- Handmade Seed Balls
Give unused paper new life by using it to wrap a cluster of seeds, soil and a bit of clay to make seed balls for planting in the garden or yard. Participants also make a sheet of seed paper that can be given as a unique card that keeps on giving.

July 8, Block Printing
Block printing is a versatile way to create beautiful custom designs or patterns on almost any surface. Participants learn how to use block carving tools on a relief block, then how to ink their carved block and transfer the design to paper, fabric or other substrates to create a unique piece of art.

July 22, Collage, Zines and Found Poetry
Found poetry is a process that allows people to create a literary collage by combining borrowed text to make something new and fresh. Participants experiment with visual collage techniques to present newly formed poetry in a hand-bound zine made from used books, acrylic and watercolor paint, ink and more.

Aug. 5, Watercolor Painting
Watercolor is a flexible and accessible medium to start painting. Instructor-led demonstrations cover the basic tools and a variety of methods such as wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry and layering to produce a lovely still life image. Participants leave with a finished watercolor and confidence for further exploration.

Aug. 19, Reusable Fabric Tote
Learn to plan, cut and sew a reversible fabric bag that can be used for running errands instead of plastic. Participants choose between a limited number of fabrics and add straps and pockets as desired.

The Art Center continues to follow state and MDH guidelines for Covid-19 with some adjustments to keep our community thriving. Currently, we highly recommend that all individuals wear a face mask at all times indoors and if within 6 feet of others outdoors, even if vaccinated. If unvaccinated, please plan to wear a mask for the entirety of the program. Please bring your own mask or one will be provided.
